Rising Prices, The Pope, and Barack Obama after the jump.
Apparently, Health Insurance companies are getting tired of having to “insure the health” of all those pesky customers. More and more companies are adopting new plans that increase the copay for perscription drugs to hundreds and even thousands of dollars. The health insurance companies argue that the system is designed to keep health care costs down for everybody. And in their defense, it does save money for 9 out of 10 insurance industry executives. Always look to the upside. This won’t come up at work because nobody understnads their health insurance - which is probably why we all can get hosed like this without noticing.
Finance ministers from all over the world met in Washington yesterday to discuss rising food prices. Global food prices have increased 83% in the past three years and has resulted in rioting worldwide. Most world leaders agree that the food crisis is the biggest economic crisis that the world is facing.
But forget all that doom and gloom and get out your giant hats and bulletproof bubble cars; the pope is coming! Pope Benedict XVI will begin a visit to the United States in Washingotn tomorrow. Highlights will include a state dinner at the White House that the Pope is skipping and the chance that the Pope will speak out about the abuse scandal.
In the grand Democratic tradition, Senator Barack Obama tried to snap defeat from the jaws of victory this weekend by saying that small-town voters are bitter and that is why they cling to things like guns, religion, or anti-trade ideas. Here is a loose summation of what he said and here is today’s story of where we are now. Like all gaffes that have the possibility to kneecap a campaign, this one has a little too much truth for a lot of people to just dismiss it out of hand or for Obama to completely go back and say he made a mistake. I don’t care for the Senator’s remarks just because they give smug assholes a chance to feel superior because they “understand” the common man better than that fancy Senator.
