Election 2008 Retrospective: A Children’s Treasury of Candidate Heads Photoshopped onto Things
Posted by Josh in Barack Obama, Election 2008, hillary clinton, Indiana, Iowa, John Edwards, Mitt Romney, New Hampshire, retrospective, South Carolina, speed racer, Super Tuesday
Results are impending and I need to get out of work so I can get home in time to hear sweet nothings from Chris Matthews (and hopefully squeeze in some phone banking). However, let’s take a quick look back over the past year to highlight some of our coverage of this historic election.
The Beginning
Our first morning news ever, on December 13, 2007, mentioned Barack Obama. Also hilarious photos of MLB stars looking worried. I like to imagine them saying it in a Scooby Doo voice. (For those who are curious, our first post ever was about Speed Racer! What’s up with that?) January 14, 2007 was the first time we every consolidated into an “Election 2008″ tag. That post kinda sucked though. Surprise surprise.
The long, strange trip continues after the jump.
Early Primaries
We weren’t around for the Iowa caucuses or New Hampshire, but we started to hit a stride talking about the primaries that followed. First Obama won the South Carolina Primary in a landslide and we responded by making a simply HORRIFIC graphic that now feels kinda morbid. We loved Mitt Romney, and were gald to see him win the Michigan Primary, even if it was under suspicious circumstances.
Then, people started dropping out. After the Florida Primary we lost Rudy Giuliani and John Edwards. If only he had stayed in so that we could have created hialrious photoshopped images out of his infidelity scandel (that applies to both Edwards and Giuliani).
Super Tuesday
Super Tuesday came, and 22 states heading to the polls was supposed to be the end of Senator Barack “That Guy” Obama. However, Obama and Clinton split the vote, meaning that the process continued. However, Super Tuesday forced Governor Romney from the race and McCain’s comeback was complete.
Late Primaries
Obama’s lead grew and grew, but Clinton refused to say die. We actually started to run out of things to photoshop to represent candidates fighting. Indiana kids made us proud by showing up in record numbers. However, Clinton would eventually bow out shortly before a historic nominating convention. (Is anyone else feeling oddly nostalgic for the days of Hillary-hating?)
The Long Hot Summer, Conventions, and a Trip to Crazy Town (aka Wasilla, AK)
We took these off, because why bother?
Down the Stretch
Hey look! Obama’s got a huge lead! The arrogant socialist goes and celebrates by blowing cash on a half hour of television. And here we are.
Hang in there, gang. Just minutes now.
