Your Morning News 1.27.09

AP-Yahoo Poll-FootbalSo, it has been a few days huh? Well last week I was in DC celebrating a historic event and a great day for our country. It was  day that a lot of people thought wouldn’t come, but a few faithful who worked hard and truly believed were rewarded when [LAME ASS ARIZONA CARDINALS JOKE].

Tough crowd. Anyway yes, we have been on a bit of a sabbatical for inauguration and then post-vacation work craziness.

What kind of world has Obama inherited? Yesterday about a dozen companies announced layoffs totally around 75,000 jobs. What is most significant about these job cuts are that they aren’t affecting the usual banking and real estate industry, the ax is falling across large swaths of manufacturing, retailing and information technology, taking out workers from New York to Seattle. Expect to see more cuts as companies take stock of 2008 and begin implementing 2009 plans.

Thankfully, the Senate has saved us! They have confirmed Timothy Geithner as President Barack Obama’s Treasury secretary by a 60-34 vote. Though there were threats about derailing his nomination because of some tax issues in his past, not even the US Senate is stupid enough to force a protracted battle over a Treasury Secretary nomination with a staggeringly popular President during a financial crisis.

Since he not only has to save the US economy but also the entire world, President Obama did an interview with Al-Arabiya, an Arabic-language satellite TV network in which he stressed that the US ‘not your enemy.’ Woo! Public Diplomacy totally rocks! Anyone know why he didn’t do Al Jazeera?

Good news? You say you want good news? How about the fact that Bill Kristol is no longer a columnist at the New York Times? That’s right, his last day was yesterday – you won’t have old Bill Kristol to kick around anymore. Who are we kidding? He friggen loved it and is moving over to the Washington Post to continue his liberal-enraging, correction-requiring brand of commentary. Thank god, I, like every other blogger ever, was terrified about not having Bill Kristol columns to make fun of every week. That might force me to think, or possible to do some actual research!

As a bonus, head after the jump to see a hilarious Kristol image from our archives.

OMG TV: In which I objectify actresses from NBC sitcoms

Posted by Jeff in , , , , , , , , , , ,

8:30 – Kath & Kim (NBC)

Shamelessly dumb and painfully brightly colored, Kath & Kim is my guilty pleasure these days.  Selma Blair being smokin’ doesn’t hurt.

9:00 – The Office (NBC)

There’s only something like two episodes left with Amy Ryan, which is extremely sad.  Savor every last minute of it.  The real question about tonight’s Halloween themed episode is: can Pam top her super hot cat costume from a couple seasons ago? (Note: way hotter than this weird sketch I found online is makes it seem.)

9:30 – 30 Rock (NBC)

Sweet sassy molassy, 30 Rock is back!  Oh happy day!  This is tremen– oh, it’s the episode we all watched online a week ago.  Hmm.  Well… at least we know that it’s a good episode?  (And that Tina Fey is hot?  Yessss, three for three.)

10:00 – Life on Mars (ABC)

My favorite new show of the fall season, even putting aside my tremendous love for the original BBC version.  Travel back to 1973 New York City, back when Harvey Keitel looked… well, exactly like he does today, I guess.  Man he’s a ragged looking dude.

Late Night

Ashley Olsen is forced to eat a gosh darn sandwich already on Letterman, Christina Applegate is our favorite recent breast cancer survivor on Leno, Jada Pinkett-Smith discusses being the Fresh Princess on Conan, Bill Kristol annoyingly smirks on The Daily Show, and badass rock band Wilco tears it up on Colbert.

Your Morning News: 10.27.08

Man, this election has had some ups and downs. Thank god we have been here, day after day, giving you a brief rundown of top stories and explaining the news of the day. Yup… every day…. no 3-month gaps here. No sir. Anyway, very glad to be back and looking forward to talking about the news with all of your again. Back to it!

The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times lead with election news. the Post leads with a new poll that shows Obama with a 7-point lead in VA. The poll largely credits voters belief that Obama is better-equipped to handle the economy. The LA Times has a story about the growing popularity of Californians voting by mail. Voting by mail greatly increases turnout though some feel that it makes voters more likely to make a mistake in voting. The New York Times leads with a preview of the states where the candidates will be campaigning and points out that both campaigns are focusing on traditionally Republican states. Though I have mocked it in the past, Bill Kristol’s column has become an invaluable preview of what the McCain campaign’s message will be. This week will be Commander in Chief week. Kinda like shark week but with more saluting.

USA Today leads with the news that the Pentagon will continue the policy know as “stop loss.” The program involuntarily extends soldiers’ tours of combat duty and is largely seen as a glaring symbol of how overstretched the military is. Bad news for soldiers, their families, an human decency, but it could mean a sequel for these guys.

The Syrian government has condemned attacks on a village on the border of Syria and Iraq. Iraq said the area targeted was used by militants to launch cross-border attacks in Iraq. The US has neither confirmed nor denied the incident.

Your Morning News: 3.24.08

I’m back kids, and I’ll never leave you with that mean old man (Jeff) again. Unless writing this post makes me late for work today. In which case I will continue to trade him packs of cigarettes and whiskey so that he will write the morning news for me.

The first weekend of March Madness is over, and we are down to the sweet 16. There have been highs, lows… and middles I suppose. I didn’t fill out a bracket, and I am already feeling alienated from the office gossip. Luckily, the good people at ESPN wrote a great summary of the games so far. I think that little organization might just make it in the sports news-gathering world. I am loathe to make sports today’s must-read, but yeah, read it or risk not have any idea what anyone is talking about.

JP Morgan is in talks to quintuple the deal they made to buy Bear Stearns in order to woo over holdout investors. By my calculation, that would mean JP Morgan would have to pay an exorbitant 1/37th what Bear Stearns is worth. Since I haven’t been doing Your Morning News, I really have no idea what either of these companies do or what this is all about. My guess is that no one else does either. If this comes up, make a joke about how glad you are you don’t work at Bear Stearns. If you do work at Bear Stearns, well good luck.
