Election 2008 Retrospective: A Children’s Treasury of Candidate Heads Photoshopped onto Things

Posted by Josh in , , , , , , , , , , ,

Results are impending and I need to get out of work so I can get home in time to hear sweet nothings from Chris Matthews (and hopefully squeeze in some phone banking). However, let’s take a quick look back over the past year to highlight some of our coverage of this historic election.

The Beginning

Our first morning news ever, on December 13, 2007, mentioned Barack Obama. Also hilarious photos of MLB stars looking worried. I like to imagine them saying it in a Scooby Doo voice. (For those who are curious, our first post ever was about Speed Racer! What’s up with that?)  January 14, 2007 was the first time we every consolidated into an “Election 2008″ tag. That post kinda sucked though.  Surprise surprise.

The long, strange trip continues after the jump.

Time Romney It turned out that $86 million spent (and $35 million of debt) simply isn’t enough to buy yourself a nomination anymore as Mitt Romney officially withdrew from the Republican race yesterday following a disappointing Super Tuesday showing. The announcement came at the Conservative Political Action Conference where the crowd gave the Mittster a fond farewell, then despite party pleas to the contrary, serenaded the presumptive nominee with a hearty round of boos. No boos coming from the President, however, who has deemed the time correct to step in and start stumping. Look out, Barry and Hillary, the GOP now gets nine months of unified campaigning.

One more reason to stay uninvolved in local politics: A man opened fire at a city council meeting in Kirkwood, Missouri, killing five and wounding the city’s mayor, among others. Charles Thornton had a history of hostility with the Kirkwood’s council zoning commission, and had been barred from attending any meetings. He was shot to death as he tried to escape.

Nearly 60 members of the Gambino organized crime family were arrested in a round of federal stings on charges ranging from murder to drug dealing and gambling. Mob boss John “Jackie the Nose” D’Amico was among those captured, though powerful capo Nicky “Little Nick” Corrozo managed to escape and is now being hunted. The mobsters apparently went without a fight, saying that their hearts simply hadn’t been in it since the Sopranos ended. The Smoking Gun provides us with a roundup of some of the best nicknames of the bunch, including “The Greaseball,” “Bobby the Jew,” “Tommy Sneakers,” and “Mike the Electrician.”

Romney Cell

So yesterday was the Super-Duper Tsunami Tuesday, and all across America people are rolling out of bed feeling tired, unsatisfied, and slightly confused. That is what happens when you have a one-night stand… with DEMOCRACY. After millions spent on campaigns and weeks spent on analysis, the Super Tuesday Primaries in 22 states were roughly a tie for the Democrats. Because of arcane and apparently legal delegate apportionment rules, even states where one candidate won by a solid margin split their delegates pretty evenly. Senator Clinton won more of the big states like New York and California, but Senator Obama won more states total. Now the country turns its attention to the next round primaries, which will be taking place on Feb. 9th and includes Louisiana, Washington, and Kansas. So prepare to hear a lot of tearful speeches about Hurricane Katrina. If someone asks what you think, just say it will probably go all the way to the convention while you sigh of infinite weariness.

The Republicans and the rest of today’s news after the jump.

The Wall is Down

We have been talking about the stock market for a few days. Yesterday, the market was down 300 points at lunch and up 300 points by the time the market closed. Overall, the market seems to be bouncing back from the slide it was in over the past few days. Most people are crediting the Federal’s rate cut along with some other government subsidies that I don’t really understand for restoring investor confidence in the market. However, many are still saying that the Federal Reserve is too concerned with the market and needs to focus more on controlling inflation.

The Presidential campaign continues to stagger along heading into the primaries in Florida and South Carolina this weekend. How do you know today is a bit of a slow news day? There is a New York Times article saying that, among the candidates, Mitt Romney is the most hated. Man, Giulinani can’t win anything! Additionally, some people are a trifle upset that the former President is on the campaign trail so vigorously. And when I say vigorously, I mean like a rabid weasel in a sack. Finally, for those of you who were thinking things might be resolved on Super Tuesday, think again.

In Iraq, a lack of any major political solutions are jeopardizing the military successes the United States have had during the surge. If you want to sound smart, nod knowingly and say, “This was the danger of the surge all along.”

Egypt brought down a section of border wall, enabling Gazans to get some relief from the economic blockade they have been suffering. Unfortunately, Nintendo couldn’t keep up with demand so many of them had to return to their war torn homeland without a Wii.

And finally, from the files of “Screw you for that threatening letter I got sophomore year,” the movie industry has admitted it overstated the amount of movie piracy that goes on on college campuses. The Motion Picture Association of America has said that college students are responsible for 44% of illegal movie downloads. Their new estimate: 15%. They have cited ‘human error.’

Clones

Is it any wonder that the same day the FDA approved cloning, Mitt Romney won the Michigan Primary? Just check out the Five Brothers (Above is Romney and his “sons”). Romney won his home state of Michigan, giving him his first primary win. All you really need to know is that this means there is still no clear front runner on the Republican side. If you want to sound savvy, say that the biggest winner yesterday was Rudy Giuliani. If people ask you what you mean, change the subject and ask them if they saw the love-fest that was the Democratic debate last night.

Macworld, one of the biggest consumer electronics events of the year, kicked off yesterday. We already talked about the big announcement. But, just a heads up, Steve Jobs is kind of a jerk.

The Secretary of Defense is criticizing the few allies we have left — that will go well. Meanwhile, the President is was in Saudi Arabia yesterday to discuss… well they didn’t talk about anything important but it looks like they are having a great time.

Apparently, the US is now the third-world country you go to in order to launder your euros. Also, Jay Z raps about Euros instead of Benjamins, can a recession be far behind?
